i'm guessing shards must be experiencing different things. i see @LastJedi says he/she has always seen variety.
i have never seen variety from day one i started playing. as soon i was able to get into arena it was the same boring meta team. i figured this would be true for all shards.
i think shards should be decided on your goals of the game. put the competitive whales in a shard and the ones who aren't competitive in another shard.
There is no never going to be a lot of variety because most people are just going to follow what those at the top are doing. The challenge, is having a meta that can allow variety. The wiggs meta, for all its hate wasn't actually centered around wiggs, it was centered around having a fast tank with a good dispeller and/or strong aoe attacks. If you understood that, you could have built a decent team without using wiggs at all.
There's a lot of characters that could have fit in and so it really left things wide open as to how you could build your team. The problem right now, is that things aren't nearly as wide open because the meta is not centered around skills as much as it is centered around strong zetas and characters with op abilities. People think it's more diverse now because you can build a decent first order, zQGJ, sith, or Rex team, but those teams that are competitive are all built around a very specific box and if you try to think outside that box you're in for a rude awakening.
i couldn't agree more. which is why this discussion seems so funny to me. there is always a meta that dominates arena and there will always be one.
the sith meta is no different or any more special than any other meta we have had. there are tons of players who feel the same as the OP feels about other metas. i know i was and still am so sick of seeing wiggando on every player.
it's because the majority of the players apparently are competitive. they want to be at the top at all costs so they will use whatever toons get them there. personally i prefer to play with toons i like whether they get me to the top or not. i could care less about being rank 1. that doesn't mean a thing to me. i'm not impressed with who is number 1 and i wouldn't be impressed if i were in that spot. there's way more to this game than being number 1 but thats just my opinion.
I like being competitive but doing something different at the same time. I ran Jedi with a fast scarif pathfinder when everyone else ran wiggs with a fast sthan and I occasionally broke into the top 20 (I think I could have done better with sun fac but he wasn't farmable then). I'd rather sit in the mid 30's with my Jedi team (I'm using zQGJ right now) than cash out in the top 5 everyday because I followed the zaul meta.
My big concern right now is that I think the power creep has finally gotten out of hand. If you want to be competitive but do something different, you basically have to start a five person faction team from scratch with multiple zetas. There is no more tweaking a roster to make it work better.
