Now retreating results in the battle being reset fully so could can't eliminate individual character and then rotate your team (your team now has to be fully defeated for any changes to be cemented).
Each one had its advantages and disadvantages. You mentioned the advantages above, however, in the previous instance, if a character died and you retreated out, that character was permanently dead for the rest of GW. You could not retreat out, bring in Daka or Ewok Elder, and then revive the character. It is for this reason, people would resort to Force Closing the App.
In general, I agree that the previous version of retreat made things a bit easier, however, it also allowed for more strategy too. The thing they really needed to fix was making sure characters didn't lose buffs/debuffs when you retreated out in the previous version (another advantage that really helped. If an opposing character say taunted, you could immediately leave, and negate the taunt).
Yeah, I can see that. I certainly work the current retreat to my advantage (that and the fact that apparently all actions and results are predetermined after the first go so you know exactly what will happen when you jump back in to try something different).
