I suppose the meta is just the combination of the 5 toons and mods which are most likely to net you the most number of wins across the largest number of situations.
When u have unlimited resources, any team can made be effective, but for those who cannot afford said resources, "chasing the meta" is still the most cost effective way of keeping pace. Guess that's why people are so interested in talking about the "meta"
