I think it's mainly for feedback/technical data and consumer tendency information across the board for the game as a whole to better suit the communities wants and needs for updates to make the game better. No big deal imo.
Right up until EA decides that you're playing games that are similar to their offerings and shoves ads so far down your throat about those games that you eject cash on the other end, if they want player feedback (or others), it's often better to ask than steal.
From a purely technical perspective, this wouldn't benefit the game, but rather sales and 'insight', which is often data harvested from you and then sold to other companies. Always be mindful of the profit motive, Padawan.
In the end, though, if you're ok with everything about what you are or aren't doing being visible just so you can play a game, I suppose that's your right.
