I have been playing around one month on a new account (only spent on an hyperdrive bundle so far) and this is what I get as a Grand Arena match.

its most likely because people generally don't like playing 3v3 so they drop in rankings due to lack of participation, and bigger accounts might do 1 battle for minimal crystals and done and look to climb back up in 5v5; since 3v3 is not a fun game mode for most people. I myself usually drop in rankings either by not signing up or get baited thinking its 5v5 and I just set no defense and sandbag my rating. I myself even went on a griefing spree in carbonite - chromium for a bit beating up low lvl GP accounts with a 10.7M account just because fk 3v3, and because well I just can and there's nothing in the TOS that says I cannot do so otherwise. but yeah 3v3 season causes mass apathy for participation which causes big accounts to drop into lower rankings.
There’s no matching algorithm. Players of equal skill rating are matched with one another, period.
