Two factors. Everyone agrees on the time, more or less. If you had the time, congrats, but 14 hours to get nothing is ridiculous, I don't care WHAT you're doing.
But the main factor was 99.5% of people - doesn't matter what - did not get the toon for the tournament -- on top of the prohibitive time. The people on this forum are likely part of the 0.5% who did get rewards from tournaments, you're not seeing the broader base which saw it as a total waste of time. I think one or two of my guildies comes on here, but none of them ever comment. Participation wouldn't continued to drop and drop.
The current event system is no tournament, but drops you a toon you can choose to gear AND that lets you unlock ships for said toon if they have them (i.e. Tie Reaper). It's no Yoda/EP level event, but far better for the 95.5%. Tourneys as they were would be GREAT if it wasn't for new toons - I.E. an amazing gear chest or some vault'o' mods. There's a certain pressure when the prize is the new ship/toon and it's more then likely you won't have any shot at it.
RE: the return of tourney's -- Make it, maybe, an automated round robin with a smaller pool of players (Initially based on Arena rank) - you have 6 battles day 1. Winners all get grouped in a new pool together - losers get pooled together - it continues. The tourney ends, say, day 4 - everyone has win/lost for three days and are in their final group - with tiers of rewards based on pool.
Points should be based not just on life/death but also damage dealt, or maybe just by damage dealt. Having an unkillable heal squad wouldn't necessarily be the path to victory.
