People yell F2P because they want to show that they are about skill and dedication, and did not buy their way to anything.
It's a normal bi-product of freemium models.
Of course games cost money, and the players that spend hundreds or even thousands are the ones helping the game make money.
Personally I don't spend much money on freemium games anymore, because I always find myself spending more than initially planned, and then I get flattened by Chinese people spending thousands or even 10s of thousands. I have also run into game companies that do not ban cheaters, probably cause they still spend money and it causes other players to spend more money to keep up (I am looking directly at you R2games). It's especially bad when companies claim they ban cheaters and want fair play and then don't ban people after confirming they will.
I prefer a level playing field in games as then you don't get that one guy killing everyone in the entire server who spends thousands of dollars.
So far I am level 59 in this game and I am surprised at how friendly this game is for F2P players. I spent some money at the beginning to get a little kick start, and I want to support the game, but I don't want to spend anymore as I see that the gains will be very small now for how much you spend.
:edit: the other problem with the freemium models for me is that the biggest rewards are for those at the top, and so those that spend the most money. This makes it easier for them to stay at the top and dominate, and continue to get further ahead of everyone else cause they are getting the best rewards every time. This aspect of the model causes the other players to either spend more money to keep up and remain competitive, accept that they won't keep up, or quit starting on a new server where they have a chance again, or just quit altogether.
