- I too am old guard. Saw ep 6 in the theaters, and fell in love with the story.
I agree with SifuSteve. I think that Lucas had messed up the prequel trilogy so bad that it was almost neccesary for Disney to go back to its roots with an almost exact rehash of the original story. This connected with older fans and brought them back into the Star Wars universe.
The only thing I disagree about was why Lucas changed the original Han shoots scene. I don't think it was related to the board of classifications. The movie had already been out since 77 and was already rated. There was no need to change it for that reason.
From what I have seen about interviews with Lucas, the reason he changed it was because he didn't want Han to be seen as a cold blooded killer. Which is stupid. If someone has a gun drawn on you and is talking about how much they will enjoy seeing you die, I think at that point it is ok to consider firing first as an act of self defense. It doesn't make Han a cold blooded killer. It makes Han a bad ass like he is supposed to be throughout the movie.
The other stuff he changed just looks ridiculous. All the obviously fake CGI characters he added add nothing to the story and take away from the way the original movie was shot using actual models.
Why would you take one of the most popular movies of all time, with the biggest cult following, and change things? There was absolutely no need for it, except to get people to buy the new version so Lucas can make some more cash off of the franchise. "CptCaveman;620343" wrote:

.
Exactly.
Old guard here as well. I had mixed feelings about EP7. First off... they killed Han (the single greatest character of my childhood outside of Blondie in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy) and while I understand it from a plot standpoint, part of me didn't like it. That said, overall I thought 7 had great pacing, cinematography, and interesting new characters (though Kylo was mediocre - but I may be biased because I already had thought Adam Driver stunk as an actor given his work on Girls). Had I never seen ep4 or 6, I would have considered it a fantastic movie. However, I did see them so I really wish the overarching plot had been a little bit different than "we need to destroy this giant planet killing weapon with tiny ships". Anything else! Overall though, ep7 got me excited about watching what is sure to be 1 Disney movie a year in the Star Wars universe from now until I die.- I never drew first but I drew first blood, Im no ones son, call me Han Solo.
