Why Should I Take New Characters to 5 Star?
I was reviewing the title update post while preparing for the new era to start next week. I had initially intended to take each new character to five stars but, after giving it some thought, I don't see the value as opposed to four stars. Let us break it down, starting with some initial reminders about how things will work:
- You can get to relic 2 at four stars and relic 4 at five stars. Characters must have six or more stars to get to relic 5.
- Maul (Hate-Fueled) will be unlockable at four stars with 5/6 of the era characters at four stars. Having 5/6 at five stars will give a five star Maul.
- Three star units are limited to era level 65, four stars to 75, and five stars to 85.
- Any era character that finishes the era between era levels 65 and 85 will be converted to a G12 with tier 7 abilities.
- On average, it costs 2509 crystals to get a new character to four stars, 6195 to get to five stars, and 12990 to get to six stars.
My main hang up is that there's no difference in post-era conversion between a three star, a four star, and a five star: they'll all turn into G12s.
Also, Spider-Maul looks very cool and the Stranger team looks strong but he's era-locked so the value of unlocking him early is limited to his contribution in Coliseum and Era Challenges and, given this is the first of these new eras, we don't have a clear idea of what that looks like. Also most units don't really start shining until R5+ so the value of an R2 or 4 Maul is dubious.
The Era Battle system had its problems but it was a great way to encourage players to spend crystals taking characters to five stars instead of just waiting for them to become farmable. At this time, I'm not seeing anything like that in the new system.
I'm assuming Era Challenges with be star-gated but they've said daily players will be able to finish the episode track. So the only difference between 3-5 stars seems to be hypothetical coliseum usefulness but that has a lot of questions too. For example, depending on how era resources are gated, leveling rate will be much more important (especially early on) than your level cap. E.g. it doesn't matter if your characters can get to level 65 or 105 if, on a given day, everyone who bought the era pass has level 60 characters and everyone who didn't has level 40 characters.
That's my take at this point. I'm hoping we get more info on Monday but I think I'll stick with taking the new characters to four stars for now.
