Do we know that Coliseum and the era challenges don't give you the chance to earn extra stars if you start at a certain point like the old marquees did? Maybe there's some math to say it's better to take them to 5* with packs.
But if it makes little to no difference what a f2p can realistically do, I see the point in just saving crystals. If other valuable Coliseum or era challenge rewards are hard- or soft- gated behind star level, that would be the argument I could immediately see.
