Why the scoundrel event is a waste of time, for me

Leveling Scoundrels to beat the Scoundrel Event is an invest in the future. In the longterm you will get your credits back.
It would only be a waste if it would be a one time event, but the scoundrel event will be there one time in a week.

Also the new events where you need Rebels/Clones or Empire/Droids will be an invest in future. You will get in a regular base shards and gear items.
