Is it just for bragging points who has most or what literally have a player in my shard trying his hardest to push as much each day lol. Was beating him 40k down still doing it 20k down will catch soo...

It doesn't matter, after a point.
Remember - your fleet gp is a sum of your cap ship and 7 lesser ships. You start with the cap ship plus 3 on the field. You'll probably reinforce once, maybe twice, before the battle is over. So those last two ships are there purely to inflate GP (and give you options, sure). I could leave 2 slots empty while the opponents 2 ships total 80k and still win.
