Galactic power importance in fleet arena

Is it just for bragging points who has most or what literally have a player in my shard trying his hardest to push as much each day lol. Was beating him 40k down still doing it 20k down will catch soon enough he has ran out of 7* ship upgrades and once I close 1.5 lvl gap in 3 lvls once I hit lvl 85 be on equal playing field lol
