Geo Soldier is useful because he has a decent ship. His ship is an easy farm, he's an easy farm, and from what I remember he's pretty easy to gear pretty high, which also helps his ship.
His ship is slow, but if you can bring him in off the bench to hit a target locked ship with his special and associated assist, it generally goes "boom."
Also he packs a decent punch himself at the early stages of the game. But you won't have any use for him beyond his ship later on.
