Some great stuff in this thread.
I would add that the strongest defense is more "mental" than anything else. Just think about the teams you hate facing and pass by when choosing opponents.
For me, anytime Daka is paired with Dooku and at least one hard-hitting assist, I avoid it if possible. I run with 2-3 Jedi so first round stuns can get out of hand quickly. Characters not susceptible to bad AI judgement are good too, like Rey.
You want to have fear in your side and RNG can create that fear. I would take a look at the most common teams in your particular bracket and work from there. If they are using "X", what would make their life harder or annoying? Most people aren't buying many refreshes if any so you want to choose 5 battles you have a good shot at winning.
