Using Old Ben as a GW suicide team buffer [video added!]

A long time ago (not saying it) Old Ben was a premiere arena character that whales used to pummel everyone into submission. Oh, how I hated seeing that hand wave across my guys, and all that red appear. I kept leveling Dooku despite everyone telling me not to in large part to deal with the old man.
But things have changed. Speed is now king, and Old Ben is not that fast. Also, Yoda came out and he has a move that stops Old Ben in his tracks. Finally, because Ben is tanky, the AI tends to ignore him on defense so you rarely get his main (death) benefit.
So, all the non-whales are excited that they can now get Ben, and the whales are yawning and telling everyone not to get excited. But this move is actually fantastic for a completely different reason: Galactic War.
If you haven't yet, you will eventually come across teams that require "suicide squads" or "B teams". Basically, not-your-best characters that can be used to make the AI blow specials, to whittle them down, kill a key character, or wipe them entirely.
The idea here is to barely unlock Old Ben at 4*, then get him to level 52 to get the best components of "If You Strike Me Down", and then give him no gear and send him out there to get "struck down". I obviously haven't tested this yet, but according to one of the database sites, a 4* no-gear level 52 Old Ben has around 5k health. My guess is that the AI will find that a juicy target.
Assuming 2 refreshes in Cantina per day, you can get him unlocked in under 6 days. With 1 refresh, 8 days. You don't have to invest in gear, and the credit cost is only around 500k. You can tinker with him, and if in the future he does re-enter the meta somehow, you've got a head start.
He would be amazing with AoErs around. I can't wait to try him with my other favorite GW suicider, Anakin. :)
EDIT: You have to upgrade gear to Level IV to unlock his unique, so he ended up with 6600 health.
EDIT: Two early tries at this, one didn't work so well, one was much better. It excels against teams with AoEs, as this will drop him down to yellow/red, which tempts the AI to finish him off. Video of this in action: https://vid.me/pJPc

The abilities unlock at a certain gear level. Don't know what level for old ben but usually its something like gear 4

Yep, I forgot about this in my plan, which I just discovered as I unlocked him. So he ended up with 6600 health, more than I wanted but not too "bad".
Anyway, 500k credits to level him up, some low-level gear pieces I already had, a couple of purple ability mats, and I have a level 52 Old Ben to tinker with in GW.
I plan to use him on my "pain squad" which consists of various combinations of the following B characters from my lineup: Fives, Anakin, FOTP, Sid, Phasma, Kylo. Probably first try will be Old Ben, Anakin, Phasma, Kylo, Fives. My guess is that this will take out any GW node, and with less than half the health of anyone else, I'm hoping the AI will target him first.
I'll report back how it goes.
  • So my first try didn't work out too well. The AI is so incredibly dumb that it kept attacking Kylo with his counter up while leaving a near-dead Ben alone until the fight was nearly over. He was 3rd to die, so it was a bit of fun, but not up to its full potential.
It actually seems to work best against maxed teams and especially ones with AoEs. Also, it works better with him in the leader slot, as leaders seem to get "extra attention" in fights.
But when it works, boy does it work. Check this out, against a fairly nasty Phasma team.

    Note the amusing Dooku-die-self-resurrect-double-counter-then-attack. Didn't matter. :)

Beautiful! That almost makes me regret 7*-ing my Ben.

Yeah that's why this is really aimed specifically at non-whales who just now have the chance to unlock Ben.
Honestly it usually doesn't work as well as it did here. I'm still figuring out the optimal strategy for using him.
I think the AI tends to target based on health percentage and not on total health, so his starting out at low health doesn't help. When everyone is full, it's random unless a healer is present, in which case the healer is targeted. So even though he has 6.6k, he is not a primary target at first.
This is why it works best on AoE teams. Against a Phasma/Sid/Kylo/Dooku team you can probably "get Old Ben dead" pretty quickly. If they don't target him, you just attack a counterattacker once or twice. Since it's GW, you can pick and choose which node to use him on.
