Everything in the game is a money grab one way or another...I was able to get my Phoenix toons (except Sabine) up to 5 stars with regular farming. The event actually benefits F2P and small fishes.
Phoenix Squad is a very good group to use when one starts in the game through mid-level. Ezra, Sabine, and Hera are usable on their own.
