I think everyone is looking at this backwards. Phoenix being "featured" for this event - and Thrawn being the "legendary" hero obtained with this event is not completely/partially/necessarily because of all "the love" for them - or their popularity. This game is as much a "commercial" for the characters and show as the show is the basis for the game. It works both ways.
Some people (many people?) have commented that they didn't even know who Thrawn was until they came on these forums. That's my point. Disney isn't only having EA/CG produce a game - they're having EA/CG market their TV series...and their movies...and their other media.
