due to a technical issue the studio had to temporary disable the Facebook account linking. For more information see here . If you have previously connected your account to Facebook there won’t be any impact (your account is still saved).
The studio is trying to restore this function as soon as possible.
I am afraid that in the mean time there’s no way to transfer your existing SWGoH account with Facebook onto your new IPad ☹️.
Your only options are to use the other available methods (account transfer from Android to iOS or connecting your account to Game Center (depending on your previous device)).

So, I have a newer alt account on my phone (iPhone) that is connected to GameCenter. If I try and connect my old iPad account to GC, will I lose my alt account?

you can create multiple Game Center Accounts to keep both accounts.

You can not save two accounts on the same GC Account. You have to create another GC Account and connect your old SWGoH account to it.
If you connect your current Apple-ID to your new device and download SWGoH you will see that your device will automatically download the process of your newer alt account.
But If you have started your main account on an Apple device, usually it connects your account to GC immediately. Are you sure that your old/main account is not connected to GC (or Google Play if you have started on an Android device)?

I CAN'T STAND GAMECENTER....so I made sure to not connect to it. And, I'm not using anything from Google. I can stand Google even less than I like Apple's Game Center.
