Once you enter a battle, the server will consider it as "In Progress". Unfortunately, since you've lost connection to the server, it takes a few minutes to finish the battle (most likely in a draw, due to the timer expiring) on the server-side, which is why you saw the battle in Progress. Once it was completed, all characters used are no longer available, which is working as intended.
