Stuck on checking for updates

It wasn't my phone it was updates to the game that were an issue...

Yes, I do understand the issue for you was that the game was stuck checking for updates for 12hrs. 

Most issues can be remedied by performing some basic troubleshooting steps, including clearing various glitches and more, so it may help here. The troubleshooting steps differ though depending on what device you play on e.g. here are the Android TS steps and iOS TS steps.
