Not sure why you are saying it never assists. Probably because of the 4x speed. When you slow down the video you will be able to see that at least one of the VDs assisted in the battles.
Summon VD's have a 70% chance to assist if the target enemy has buzz droids.

For example, at 1:01 the top left VD assisted.
Also at 5:12 top left VD assisted.
