So now I have multiple different families that crash whenever my pets come home from work. I thought it was just one household that this would happen to but now it's two. Do I know for sure this is why? no. But I was able to sense a pattern every time.
I have no mods in my game, and this is the new sims 2 version.
Ooooh... This is terrible...
The thing is that one of reported issues is that pets that get promoted crash the game.
The reason is a very disappointing one: they removed the pet unlockables (fur color, fur pattern, collars etc).

I have highlighted this key icon. This is where you can take a look what pet unlockables have you unlocked, write down a code for an unlockable, or see the code of your unlockables and share it. This is how it looks:
This is missing in the Legacy edition. All of that.
Thus the game grants the pet a promotion and tries to unlock a random unlockable, finds nothing about unlockables, isn't handled to do with that and crashes.
I had the same crash yesterday!
For me it was when my dog came home from work and would get his promotion. He could go to work for several days with no crashes until I teached him the trick "speak" that was required for his promotion. It crashes everytime now when I load that save and he comes home from work.
