I cannot see the print in Sims 2 Legacy ed.

I have a 17inch laptop and when trying to get a complete screenview of the game cannot read the print at all. What's the best resolution for the game,  without the Sims looking like skinny sticks, when your laptops recommended display is 1920 x 1080?
