Sims 2 4 GB Patch breaking my game

Hi there, I recently been trying to fix my Sims 2 Ultimate Collection game, from a clean install the game manages to launch, then crash either on the home screen, or while loading into a neighborhood, or while loading up a household.

I have tried the following methods to fix my game, yet now it seems I'm getting worse results with my crashing.

4 GB Patch: Once the patch is installed into the following path: D:\Games\Origin\The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection\Fun with Pets\SP9\TSBin, the game refuses to even launch.

Graphics Rules Maker: I fiddled around with this tool and got some positive results until just recently, now whenever I try to modify the game using this tool, I get the same result now as I do when installing the 4 GB patch.

These two solutions seem to be the biggest steps into getting the game running properly (on top of various other solutions) but they just seem to break my game more. Does anyone have any experience in this area that can help me out? I've really been wanting to play Sims 2 lately but I can't.

Try repairing the game by right-clicking on it in Origin.
  • If your game isn't launching at all after installing the 4GB patch, you probably need to delete your Cache Files. This is a common problem, but it isn't broken and is an easy fix. Just delete the files called "Accessory.cache" and "Groups.cache" in your Documents > EA Games > The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection folder.

See screenshots here under "My Game Won't Start" https://pleasantsims.com/sims-2-windows-10/

And make sure you check your Config log to see if the patch actually installed properly. If it didn't, try installing on the Desktop instead (instructions in link above). Good luck!

Thanks for this tip, I’ll try it out when I get a chance, thank you so much!

I'm curious, what happens when you delete these files? Does it change anything in the game or delete anything?
  • They become corrupt and when you delete them, the game just generates new ones. It doesn't change anything at all. For more information on what the files actually do, you can go here: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=67356
  • You do not install the patch in the game files. That is probably why it is crashing, it has a unknown program in there. After downloading the 4 Gb patch, click on it to run it, then choose the Sims2EP9.exe in that file location you have to "patch" the game .exe

As for the graphic rules, it doesn't work with every graphics card. Semi recent ones and newer ones are not effected by it. You can take a look here and change your files by hand.

It doesn't matter which version of Windows you have.

It's strange because I had the game almost working at some point and then it all of a sudden stopped working. I redid all the steps I did before when I had my game somewhat running, both after repairing and reinstalling my game, only to have the game not even start up after applying the 4GB patch. So it DID work, and then for some reason after a certain point it decided it didn't want to work anymore.

Thank you for the links though, I'll take a look and see if anything helps out.
