Sims 2 Ultimate Collection crashing problem

I recently decided to install my digital copy of Sims 2 Ultimate Collection on a Windows 10 pro laptop (it's about 3-4 years old). While the game loads fine and I can play it for short bursts, it has been crashing at random regardless of what I seem to do in it and I was wondering what's causing it and how to resolve it. My system and drivers remain updated. It also happens regardless of whether it's attached to the AC adapter or running on battery or regardless of whether anything else may be plugged in or not. I did modify my graphics file in order to play the game in a higher resolution. However, this problem had been happening even on the unmodified file that the game generates.

My system specs are as follows:

Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)
Intel i7-8750H
16GB RAM
nVidia Geforce 1070 (running 1920x1080 resolution)
Realtek Audio

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!
  • Sorry for the delayed reply! No, I don't have any mods nor any CC in my game. It's completely vanilla and as mentioned earlier, a new install. Thanks for the response! :)
  • Did you try using the Graphics Rule Maker to make sure you have set the game to recognize your video chip or card and the available RAM?
  • Sorry for the delayed reply again!

I actually had used the Graphics Rule Maker in an effort to get the game to recognize my video chipset (especially given that what I have is too new for the game to have recognized it) as well as the amount of available RAM. :/

On a semi-related note, is there a way to re-enable anti-aliasing in the graphics panel of my game, so I can adjust it? It appears to be greyed out. :/
  • So I had to do quite a bit to get the game to run smoothly. Not only the graphics rules maker but also the 4gb patch I think it’s called and I had to edit the .ini files in the system folder. I don’t have all the links right now because I’m at work but if you send me a private message I can send you some information and everything I had to do.
  • Why would an .ini file need to be edited? Regardless, I'll send along the private message as requested. Thanks!

Thanks again for the tips, but unfortunately it's still crashing. :( I spent more than an hour last night on a build and was just about to save when it was back to the desktop and no progress saved. :(
  • Have you checked the crash logs? I think the most common reason for crashing is running out of memory, which is usually resolved by the 4g patch.
  • I do have the 4GB patch already installed and it is detecting it and didn't see anything leap out in the crash logs as to why it may be happening. :/
  • There are several things you can try to fix this if you have followed all the directions with the GRM and other tools. First just try updating your game with Origin. Maybe some files were corrupted (program files) when you downloaded it.

    2. Try to determine when the game crashes, what are you doing at the time? I know you said it's just random but there is probably a trigger of some sort that causes the crash. TS2 doesn't have an auto save, try saving the game more often. At least every fifteen minutes or so, or after an important event such as before they go to bed, before you have them leave the house, after they gain a skill.

    3. You haven't mentioned your system specs. Therefore, try playing in window mode. Or try reducing your screen resolution and see if that stops some of the crashing and if all else fails, try getting a deeper answer over on the Graphics Rule Makers' (Leefish) site. They can usually help you set it up correctly. It was my experience that the 4GB patch broke my game and I had to rework the GRM to work with my newer card. Leefish updated the lists of supported video cards, perhaps that file is something you need.
  • Thanks for the tips. :)

However, my system specs actually are listed in my initial post regarding the problem. :/ Also, my system is up to date in terms of drivers, OS, and software updates, etc.

In terms of what I've been doing when the crashing happens, as I said, it really is random. I've had it happen regardless of whether I'm creating a sim or moving sims onto lots or building or just trying to play or even trying to exit out of the game or trying to save, etc. Even with the timing of when it happens (ie how long I may be in my game) appears to be random as sometimes it can happen within a few seconds or minutes of getting into my game and other times it happens after more than an hour. It also happens regardless of whether I'm playing a new world or using an existing one. Again, there doesn't appear to be any common factor as to when it happens or what I'm actually doing at the time. The only given is that it does happen. :/ That's also part of what makes this so frustrating. I've even tried the old trick of disabling bumpmaps given that I do have an nVidia chipset, yet even that hasn't helped.

In terms of the Graphics Rule Maker, I actually did grab it off Leefish's site and am running the latest one available which does list my card/chipset on it (my crash logs confirm that the game is correctly detecting it).

Again, thank you for the suggestions and advice. :)
