TS2 as a TS4 player

I've been playing TS4 on-and-off for about 4 years now and is completely aware of the environment in the community, most especially the boxing ring surrounding TS2, 3, and 4. Lately I've been wanting to play TS2 after remembering that I had a lot of fun playing it for like a few days when I was little. Although, I have completely forgotten how the game feels.

As objectively as possible, do you think that TS2 is better than TS4 and is worth playing in 2020? Or is it really just the nostalgia? Should I continue devoting my time to TS4 or should I try to get back to playing TS2? I can't decide really. What do you think? Please don't take this like some shallow "ts2 g0od, tS4 bAd" discussion (or the other way around). I want to hear your opinions about this also to help myself decide. I know that I can just get TS2 and try it myself right now but eh, i don't really want to waste my time especially that i have ocd.

PS. I own all the TS4 packs and I'm a gameplay-focused player.

Questions: what is AL; and I have not heard the term virtual dollhouse used before = what does that mean?

She meant AI. :) It's what governs the autonomous actions of Sims... how they act by themselves without player intervention. "Virtual dollhouse" is basically what's in the opposite spectrum of what she meant by "life Simulator".

Well, that didn't answer my questions at all. Thanks for trying though.
  • The depth of gameplay in TS2 is amazing, and there is so much for sims to do together. TS4 is really pretty.

AI = Artificial Intelligence, the one to dictate sims smartness, their autonomy.
virtual dollhouse = the easiest way to describe this, but in a virtual environment lol

but both games are life simulators. i just used virtual dollhouse because sims in ts4 have the AI of a vacuum cleaner which makes the game boring unless i create a story in mind for them.

Thank you - got it now.
  • From my perspective, the big reason not to play it would be if you like to spend a lot of time on community lots. In Sims2, every hour you spend on a community lot you have to replay when they get home, but with their needs set at where they were when you left a lot. So if they stay out from 5-11 pm and end up really tired, they'll be really tired at 5 pm when they get home. But if your gameplay will mostly involve staying at home, I enjoyed the game like that for 10 years so I don't see why you wouldn't. I just really like traveling now in Sims 4 so I haven't ever been tempted to go back.
  • It really depends on what bothers you.

There is so much humor and surprise in TS2! The Sims' interactions feel more meaningful, there's more variety depending on how you set their personalities, and there's so much variety just in the points you assign certain traits. You can build in the world and really personalize things. There are in-game cheats to kill Sims when and how you want to, immediately, if that's what you want. There's a lot of game.

That said, your save can get glitchy just from moving Sims in and out of too many houses. You cannot clean up glasses for them. Their needs are harder to care for. There is very little difference between skinny and fat Sims. Young adult only exists in college. The graphics aren't great and the clothes are ridiculously out of style, but if old graphics feel retro and fun, that doesn't matter.

I tried playing TS2 after years and couldn't get past some of the old features. I really wish I wasn't so bothered by the things I listed because TS2 was a great game. It's really up to everyone on their own.
  • I think everyone should at least try the Sims 2 base game especially as a gameplay player. For building the Sims 2 may seem a bit outdated. Sims 3 is more of a builders and CAS game. Sims 2 and 4 have similar cartoon art style and many of the styles have been carried forward from the Sims 2 to the Sims 4, so I think you would enjoy it. I think it is much harder for Sims 4 players to play the Sims 1 game because the difficulty level is the polar opposite, so could be challenging for people to play now. But Sims 2, nah you'll be fine. Some of the Gurus have gone back and played Sims 2 again too and been impressed.

You need a selection for "other". I wouldn't say one was better or worse than the other, just different. S4 has better worlds, magic and vampires. S2 has a better attraction system, romantic options and dancing together, I play them both. I also still play S3 and Medieval/Pirates.
  • I like all four generations of Sims but would say that Sims 2 is reliable and gives you the chance to create mini stories whilst playing the game.

Sims3 is playable, there's lots of dlc you could buy via points and building was the most thing I enjoyed about Sims3. My favourite world hidden springs and I loved playing with the horses, my w m would venture out on her horse, practice jumping at the grounds or find new friends and treasure. There was hardly any technical issues.

Sims4 at the beginning basic and playable, after several EPs and game packs the Sims became playble. Then as it expanded is spend time morning out the bugs, trying to make it playable and now am hoping that reinstalling the Sims4 will help it load. If not then I shall go back to the other versions.

I reinstalled base game hopping to be able to play Sims4 and add on game packs and test, however it still won't load Sims4. I've tried everything, looks like I'm going back to the other versions.
  • I still play Sims 2 to this day! In fact, I played Sims 4 before Sims 2, but Sims 2 gave me this sense of peace that Sims 4 never did, so now I hardly ever play Sims 4.
