I am currently using my own world, Alryne Valley, but I started a new save instead of opening the save file that includes the residential homes and a small population of 16 families, so I had to spend time tossing some Sims into the existing homes. Otherwise, Lane would not have been able to increase his charisma.
Alryne Valley Forum Post
Alryne Valley on The Legacy Report - you will find links to the world and save file downloads in the post, Download Alryne Valley.
I posted two updates since you asked about the town. And, yes, Lane has had a bit of misfortune already in his short stay in Alryne Valley.
I did mention that I would probably play the next one in Sunset Valley, but I may just load the populated save of Alryne Valley instead just to get a feel for how the population interacts with one another.
I admit, I jumped in with both feet without reading all seven pages of comments on your challenge.
Let me know what you think of my progress thus far. I look forward to your feedback. I know your rules say don't buy/build anything on the lot once it's set up, but I couldn't see how you could make Ambrosia without a small kitchen.
