Queen Victoria married her cousin Albert and they have a lot of surviving children.
A good example of why a lack of genetic diversity can become problematic - in this case the spread of hemophilia amongst royals.
Hemophilia was passed through because both parents (cousins in this case) had it. That fact increased the odds. It’s estimated that 4 to 7 percent of children born to first cousins are likely to have birth defects, compared to 3 to 4 percent for children whose parents are more distantly related. That’s not nothing, but it’s also not the end of the world—or the family tree. Victoria and Albert had more children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who had no hemophilia than those who did. The real issue would arise if the next generation of kids also married their first cousins. Their offspring will have even more DNA in common—and an even greater chance for birth defects. (source).
Apart from the fact a couple can also decide not to have children if they don’t want to take the extra risk. In any case, I seriously object against ‘ew’, because having a higher chance to have children with birth defects is not ew. It’s sad at most, for the persons who it concerns. Like a colleague of mine who is seriously epileptic and has to take heavy medicines that will guarantee (100%) birth defects, if she’d ever get children. She is married and not ew.
Oh no, of course! I don't think 'ew' when cousins marry (and certainly not when people with genetic defects or disabilities do either). I only meant to point out that in some cases there may be risks/difficulties for future generations over time if there is a lack of genetic diversity, such as when royal families insisted on maintaining the royal bloodline.
No, the ‘ew’ remark wasn’t referring to what you said, sorry for the confusion. And indeed, if families continue marrying within the small circle of their own relatives, it indeed will become a problem. And, not unimportant, probably not based on love.- yeah na. that would make me so uncomfortable because i would know that they were related.
- I would, unless :
-i had other plan for that cousin
-they grew up together
Things i might consider first :
- is there anyone more interesting/better looking ?
- how old is that cousin
- how much are they related to that cousin - @JoAnne65 If you're reffering to me for putting the "ew" remark on the poll,I only did so to see if that's what people think. It doesn't reflect my personal view.

I know and I also know it feels ew to a lot of people (so I understand it’s in the poll). I just object to it because there is no rational reason to do so, that’s all. I know there are people who go ew when they hear about same sex couples, or couples with a significant age difference. I’m sure the ew will be real and if you feel it you do, but that doesn’t keep me from objecting.
The reason I made cousins fall in love and have a kid in my game was purely based on genetics by the way. I really liked the daughter my former heir’s brother had got and I loved my next heir. I just wanted to mix their genes, so that’s when I started looking into it, because to me it felt wrong as well. That’s when I learned it’s just less ‘wrong’ as I’d initially thought it was. (so I wasn’t attacking or accusing anyone personally, just that feeling of ew in itself.- Objecting to something is not the same thing as shaming someone off it, please don’t put words in my mouth. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and will have their own arguments. It does make me sad when people in real life are told they can’t love each other for some reason, won’t deny it, but this topic is about pixel characters, nobody gets hurt ;)

I understand and thank you for clarifying. I actually made this poll because I'm doing a legacy challenge and there's a pair of 2nd cousins who are attracted to each other and I was wondering if I should let them go for it or not. "ClarionOfJoy;c-17039999" wrote:

I know it's just a game, but oftentimes, one's own philosophy and way of life will reflect in their gameplay. I think though that it is natural for some people to feel repulsed by a relationship that they see as taboo and they shouldn't have to deny that for fear of coming off as heartless or not with the times. I see with the alternate lifestyles that people who push for acceptance of it have worked hard to reverse public opinion of it. I think it's good to some extent because I hated that people would use their revulsion of it to give themselves an excuse to hurt or kill other people with that lifestyle. But now it's getting to be too much! People who find it repulsive are being shamed into silence and I don't think that's good either. There should be balance, where both sides can express themselves without shaming each other.
PS - I hope you don't think I'm mad at you or hating on you. I always "like" or "awesome" your posts. I just tend to be centrist though and like balancing out the direction of a thread (if I have the time and inclination). I actually don't have a problem with alternate lifestyles, but 2nd cousins procreating increases the chance of defective traits getting passed on. I'm an RN so I'm thinking of all the risks for that and I've seen some really sad situations at the hospital, so it's a matter of practicality and not denial of a romance.
Lol, don’t worry, as it happens I’d just wholeheartedly awesomed you in another topic right before opening this topic, this really isn’t personal for me (though alledgedly my parents’ granddads were cousins  ; I wouldn’t be surprised that happened quite often back in the day when partners had to be found in the same region or even village). Like I said I initially felt bad about the cousin thing myself and my only motivation was genetics (the looks of my sims). Then I learned more about it and that’s when my opinion changed (I’d honestly always thought cousins had a really high chance of mentally ill children and that’s simply not the case, but I’ve said enough about that subject in my other posts and it’s not Sims related really). And I should add I also liked the storyline that presented itself, because my sims’ family objected to the love affair as well, it became a forbidden affair, with a secret, out of wedlock baby (I did need a next heir with the mixed genetics after all) and they avoided each other for years. In the end they married though because I do need that happy end for my sims at all times - I guess I just erase the family link, if ever it was bound to happen, they are just pixellized dolls after all. :p
I suppose the Mare's Nest will jump on this post with what I will say next: :#
I'm not very shocked as in Sweden it is allowed to marry your cousins - even if it is a rare event... :pensive: Siblings are considered close family, of course, but half-siblings can get married if they ask a special authorization.
@sofie981 Norwegian? So you're not shocked either! :) But in France, for example, relations or marriage between cousins is considered incest. In the USA it is legal in most East coast states and a criminal offense in, for example, Texas! - Hi, Jilbg! Yes indeed born and bred under the northen lights ;) Well not to many generations back the families was enormous with 14-16 children and not that much moving about so there are plenty cousins that where hitch and had perfectly "normal" children. My friend have parents who are 1'cousins and he's as normal as any. My aunt and uncle where 2' cousins and have a daughter who is brillinat in every way, sadly my uncle died of cancer some years back and is sorly missed. I could not say eww to any real live human beings who's only fault was that they fell in love ;)
Edit: I'll forget my head one day! I wanted to say that i have read your story and love the new additions you do! Can hardly wait to find out what happens in the end with Gramps, the kids + Taiga and her great love Derek the wolf :D
