Hey Graham, thanks for posting this :)
I actually made my own tutorial on the marker based on what I learned from experiments yesterday. Looks like I was about 95% correct :P

I wasn't sure what the "Construction" layer was for, so I just left that alone. But it seems that isn't necessary for a residential lot anyway.
One question though, you say we shouldn't put rabbit holes onto any layer other than "Common", does this mean AdventFear's idea of using the marker to only have the school appear in Spring, Fall and Winter could cause problems? I did try to place it on the marker yesterday, and had it on everything but summer without problems, but obviously I couldn't actually test it until Seasons is out. That's why I didn't mention that in my tutorial. I saved the lot to the bin before trying it, though, so if you don't recommend having the school on the marker, it's easy to undo :)
Now that I'm completely sure what to do, I think I'll start updating a couple of the other community lots in Sunset Valley with markers. I'm updating it with lots from the other EPs (and other extras, such as adding a real sandbox to the school (the one from Gen), using some seasonal lot markers, adding diving boards, etc) to get it ready for Seasons. Looking forward to it... a lot :P
ETA: So, if I understand this right, the construction layer is to give the effect of Sims setting up the festival, rather than it instantly changing?
In my updated version of Maywood Glen, I placed a handful of objects from each season on the construction layer, but only some are in their correct place. The rest are placed "at the side" as though they've just been put there while the rest of the stuff is brought over :P
