By the way, I should say that I think people should feel free to submit something that's really close to what someone else has submitted, but with tweaks that you think make it even funnier. I'm a big believer in the "hive mind," where multiple minds working together can accomplish better things than people working alone. To honor that, if a submission wins that was inspired by another submission, the original will get a hefty prize and recognition too.
Someone's suggestion might inspire the original poster of a caption to go back and change theirs to something even more different, if that makes sense, and that could be a really good thing, too.
I just don't want anyone to feel like they can't post their idea because it's too close to what someone else already posted; or for anyone to feel "robbed" if somebody posts something similar to theirs. The New Yorker, which runs a cartoon caption contest, says thousands of people sometimes have almost the exact same idea independently. It's not necessarily stealing.
