So...what exactly causes corruption of save games?

I noticed that in TS3, my saves tend to corrupt/bug out after a certain amount of time. Like I created one and played it for a significant amount of time until it got corrupted to the point of unplayablility (horrible lag, crashes), so I created a new one. This one only lasted a few in-game weeks before I couldn't select a family from edit town anymore, it would just freeze everytime I tried. I then had another save that lasted a bit longer, but then the lag started again, now I am at a new save which still works fine. What I'd like to know is if there are any known causes for save file corruption that are avoidable through player intervention? Does hardware play a role in this? I just got a new gaming pc, but haven't played enough on it to test it properly. I read a few times that having testingcheats activated during saving can corrupt save files in the long run, is this true and are there other player-triggered things that can cause this? I know that mods like mastercontroller and overwatch can help prevent save game corruption, but I already had all those in my game when the aforementioned bugs happened.
