Build-n-Share Challenge # 1 – Building Firm and Representative


This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

This week’s challenge actually consists of two projects. Creating a sim and creating a lot. You may enter just the lot or both of the challenges. Winners will be announced for each, creating an opportunity for six possible winners this week.

The Sim:
Create a representative for your building firm. This may be a “simself” or a pretty face for the public. Your sim may be uploaded with the lot or separately (from the sim bin).

The Lot:
Create your building firm. It can be a community lot or “home business.” It can be as big or small as you want on whichever size lot works best for you. You may also choose the style of your building (ie. ultra-modern, country, etc). Also create a name for your firm. This is the name we will associate with you and all of your builds in the Build-n-Share challenges. You should include this name in the description of your lot when you upload it to The Exchange.

Build-n-Share Challenge # 2 - A starter for Cody Klepto

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

The day has finally arrived!
The ribbon’s been cut, the cake’s been eaten, and soon it will be time to get down to some serious business.
After a whole long week of building, decorating, landscaping, and (gasp!) roofing, your firm’s doors are finally open.
You smile as you scan the (admittedly) small crowd. Just out of the corner of your eye, you see a man you don’t recognize. And he appears to have your scissors! You know, the super-big impractical ones everyone uses for such occasions. He glances around and slowly starts backing away.
“Wait a minute,” you think to yourself. “He’s taking off with my scissors!”
As a brave sim—you would have to be to start a new business in this economy—you decide to chase him!
The second you catch his eye, he looks guilty. And sad, actually.
“Um,” he says, “hi.” He scratches the back of his head and gives you that embarrassed sim look. He quickly begins to explain. “I’m so sorry about the scissors. I saw them and just had this weird compulsion.” He sighs, “I’ve been trying to get better about that.” He reluctantly passes them back.
You should be fuming, but for some reason, you actually feel a little bad for the guy. He does seem sincere.
“I know you probably want nothing to do with me, but I’d like to make it up to you. I actually came by today because I’m moving to town next week and need a new home. If you’d be willing to give me a second chance, I’d love to have you build it for me. I’ll pay and everything, I promise. I can’t exactly run off with a house full of furniture.”
It’s against your better judgment, but you consider it. Your celebration party is not even over, and here your first client. That lucky trait really is paying off.
“OK,” you sound more reluctant than you really are. “Let’s go inside.”
You usher him through the door and into the overly comfortable chair you included to get ‘em while their guard is down.
“Tell me what you need.”
“Well, I have about 16K to spend. I’d like a home with a carport, as I’d eventually like to purchase a new car so I can drive myself to work. And I’d like an entrance to the home off of the carport, too. For the inside, I’d really like the walls in neutral tones. I would like it furnished, and I want the furnishings and accents to throw in some splashes of bright color. Also, I love to paint. I would like a nice little area with lots of light to do my painting. Finally, I would like either a little attic or basement area for extra storage. I tend to accumulate things wherever I go. Funny, I know. But I don’t know, I’m just lucky or something.”
He grins a crooked grin.
“OK. I think I can do that. A week. That will be rough, but I’m sure we’ll pull it off somehow.”
After he leaves, you reach for your office set to jot down a few notes.
Funny, it was right here when you came in with…you start to second-guess your decision.
But the next morning you arrive to find the set on your doorstep tied up with a bow.
You don’t have to read the card inside.

Create a home for Cody Klepto and meet as many of his wants for his new home as you can.

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

Sitting back in your chair, you take a sip of coffee. You release a contented sigh and congratulate yourself. You finished the build for Cody Klepto. It wasn’t easy, especially with that budget, but you did it.
Taking another sip of coffee, you open the daily paper.

Family homeless after Tuesday disaster

A man and his son are without a home this morning after a meteor struck their Sunset Valley home Tuesday.
“After picking up my son from school, I returned home only to find a massive, smoking meteor had crushed it,” Frank Padre, owner of the home, said Tuesday.
“Now we are working with insurance to build another,” he said. “They said the damage was too great and it cannot be repaired.”
Frank and his son Sammy have resided in Sunset Valley for the past five years.
Sammy, who has a love for all things space-related, says he still has not lost his interest in the night sky.
“The meteor was so cool! I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said.

You put down your coffee, give the rest of the story a quick skim, and flip to the editorial section. Finding what you need, you pick up the phone.
Three hours later, Frank walks into your office.
“We can’t thank you enough for your call,” he says as he enters.
“When I saw the story, I just had to do something,” you tell him. “What do you hope to have in your new home?”
“Well,” he begins, “I’d really like to have a nice bedroom for my son.”
“He seems like a great kid. Such a love of space! I know it’s probably a touchy subject, but would you like me to play off of that for his room?”
He laughs, “Yes, that would be fine. It can always serve as a reminder of his close encounter. I’d also really like to give him a play area outside. He loves the outdoors.”
“What about you, anything you want?” you ask.
“I love to cook, so a nice kitchen would be wonderful. And we love to grill. If we could have an entry to a covered patio from the kitchen, that would be very handy.”
“OK. So a space-themed room for Sammy, an outdoor play area, and a nice kitchen with an attached, covered outdoor patio area. Anything else?”
“I’d really like mostly golds and oranges for the walls. Sammy loves blue. I think some turquoise in a few places would be nice. In his room, you can do whatever you think fits the space theme.”
“And your budget is $35,000? I think we should be able to handle that!” you tell him. “ We’ll see you next Wednesday! And tell Sammy I say, ‘hello.’”
Frank smiles as he leaves.

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

Walking up to your firm in the cool morning air, you are surprised to find a visitor. He is dressed in some of the brightest clothes you’ve ever seen. “This could be fun,” you think to yourself.
“Good morning there!” he greets you. “My name is David and I have a big building project and I heard you are the one to contact. I am the coordinator of a new town, GNOMELANDIA. Some friends and I would like to establish our own town to recognize our gnome past, and we would like you to build it! We were hoping to have it done by next week.”
“A whole town?!” You exclaim. “By next week?! I may have to call in some reinforcements.”
“A collective project. I like that,” he replies. “The gnomes are always one for teamwork. Well, what we would like is a little town with all the usual establishments, and a few more specific ones. I’ve created a list for you.”
He hands you a rather lengthy list.
“We would like the structures to have stone exteriors. And we don’t want anything to look modern. The insides should be bright and colorful. Not so much pastels, more the bold shades of colors. As much as possible, we’d like to keep an older feel to the town. We can still use modern appliances like refrigerators and lights, but we would like to avoid most of the unnecessary items/modern “conveniences” like microwaves, dishwashers, and cars. We do like to dance, though, so stereos are OK. But if their look can be somehow disguised a bit, we would appreciate it.”
“OK, I’ll call all my fellow builders for this one. Together, I think we should be able to manage. Gnomelandia…sounds like a fun place!”
“Thank you so much!” He shakes your hand rather vigorously.
“Oh!” he exclaims. “One more thing…we descendents of gnomes love games. We want a game of sorts in our town. In each build, we would like you to include seven gnomes. Some can be in the open, but we would get a kick out of some hidden ones, too. Please provide a list of the hiding spots for me, though, so I can help the townspeople who can’t seem to find them all!”
He chuckles and turns to leave.
You smile at his rosy cheeks as he hurries out.
. . .

As you are turning to your phone to make a call, your second customer of the day comes trolling in. He does not look quite so friendly as the first.
“Hello, I am here to add to the request for the town of Gnomelandia. There are a few of us who will live on the edge of town who are not so into the ‘bright colors’ mentioned by my, uh, neighbor. I’d like to add a few builds to the list that he probably forgot.”
He takes the list and begins to scrawl across it.
“OK, that should do. We want an old look, too. But no bright colors. We like it a bit more dark.”
“Hmm, well, I’d feel more comfortable if David had mentioned them, but I suppose you have a right to your request, too. I will forward this info to the building cooperative. I think we should be able to manage.”
“Very well, then,” he says as he walks out.
“Strange,” is all you think to yourself.

This week, there will be no “winners,” as it is a cooperative project for the launch of an entirely new town. However, several judges will be rec’ing every entry, I will download each lot, and you will be listed in the large post that will announce the new town here on the forum, where many simmers are likely to see your work.
The builds should follow the requirements above. Hopefully you will know which on the list are from the “gruff friend.” If you have any questions about the style of your build, please let me know. The Earth Mother’s home should probably be a bit more subdued, maybe even with some pastels. The tree houses may be made out of wood.
To those building residential lots: You are welcome to create an accompanying family if you like. The wizard has been accepted by a talented creator, Emelye. I have asked FieryFemale to create the Earthmother, but haven't heard back yet. All other sims are still available.
Didn't sign up for residential but want to create a fam? Go ahead and upload them from create-a-sim and they can be extras that others can place as they like. Remember to try to keep them somewhat "gnomey" and oldfashioned, or if you want a rebel/troll, you can go for that, too.

Build-n-Share Challenge # 5 - UNCLE SAM

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

Buried in paperwork one Wednesday morning, you can’t help but think, “I need a holiday.”

GNOMELANDIA was a lot of fun and a huge success, but what an organizational challenge. So many builders, so many requirements, and in just one week?! But you smile to yourself as you think, “This is what friends are for. And we made it great!”
A man clears his throat.
Whoops! Must have gotten lost in your thoughts.
When you look up, it’s all you can do not to laugh.
Standing in front of you is an image straight off a wartime poster. Your own, flesh-and-blood, Uncle Sam!
“I want you…” he begins. Then he laughs. “I’ve come today because I hear you do great work, and I would love to have you build a park for our Fourth of July celebration this year.”
“A park? That’s a new experience for me. Are you sure you’ve got the right builder?”
“Oh yes, I’ve seen your work. I have every confidence that you can do it and do it with style.”
You feel compelled. This man…so persuasive. After all, he is a politician. And, of course, the symbol of patriotism around the country.
“I would really like a place the whole family can gather for the big day, with activities for the youngest sims, to the sims a little closer to my age,” he points to his gray hair. “And all ages in-between. They will be there all day of course, so we need to make sure to provide all the necessities as well.”
“A park.” You begin to like the idea. “I think that could be fun. Any other particulars I should know about?”
“We have a big party planned with lots of food. So we’ll need a covered area with some buffet tables and seating for at least 20. It can be a gazebo, pavilion, picnic shelter, or an enclosed building. No matter what you choose, it should have great views of the park. Of course we also need a place where families can enjoy the fireworks.”
“Do you have a particular budget?”
“Budget?! This is the U.S. government. We’ll find the money. Maybe tax those juice bars everyone seems so fond of.” He laughs again, “But seriously, we’re at the end of our fiscal year, and any money we don’t spend is lost. So spare no expense! Make it the best park you can, and don’t worry about the cost.”
“Now that’s a breath of fresh air. Unlimited budget. Not a challenge I get every day.” You smile to yourself, “I’ll do it.”
Uncle Sam salutes you. “Your country thanks you.”
He walks out, whistling a Sousa tune as he goes.

Please use no larger than a 40x40 lot for this challenge.
I think that's achievable. If I'm wrong, let me know. I'm just concerned about our judges having to continually bulldoze to place 20 60x60 lots...

Build-n-Share Challenge # 6 - The Sharp Family

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

Enjoying the beautiful sun, a tofu dog, and most importantly, the day off, you watch the residents of Sunset Valley enjoying Uncle Sam’s new park.
Sammy Padre goes zooming by, rocket in-hand. He runs just to the edge of a picnic blanket, where you spot his father, Frank, who seems to be accompanied by a rather beautiful brunette. He smiles and waves as he spots you.
At the picnic area, you spot the back of another former customer. You’d know that orange vest anywhere. But what is Cody doing? You’re afraid to look. Much to your surprise, when he turns away from the table, more appears to be there then when he arrived. “He does try,” you think to yourself.
Uncle Sam is making his rounds, shaking as many hands as possible. You’d like to say “hi,” but you know he is busy being the consummate host of this large “party.”
As you contemplate another dog, you are approached by a small family. The mother is the first to greet you.
“Hello,” she says, “I’m Sheryl Sharp. This is my husband, Derek; daughter, Latoya; and mother-in-law, Loretta. We don’t want to be too much of a bother, but we’ve been meaning to find you. You see, we’re looking to build a new home.”
“My mother has decided she is finally going to come live with us, and we’d like a beautiful new home to share with her,” Derek adds.
“We’ve made a list,” Sheryl says, “because we don’t want to take too much of your time here and we each have some specific things we’d like.”
You smile and reach for the list. “A list is always great! Helps me stay organized and focused during the planning and building of your home. Let’s see what you have.”
Family Wants
A single-story home
No larger than a 40x40 lot (upon further consideration, a LITTLE bigger is OK)
1 main home with 2 BR and 1.5 BA
1 smaller build with a little apartment for Loretta
The Main Home
Interior of the main home in shades of brown, yellow, white/cream, and purple (Special Note: (it says) please no gold. And try to use just these colors as much as possible. You can use them in any hues and combination that looks good to you).
1 master bedroom for Derek and Sheryl
1 bedroom for teen Latoya, with a small reading and study area
A little spot for Derek to exercise. Should be tucked away and not a focal point in the home.

The Smaller House
Apartment for Loretta (elder) with small kitchen, full bathroom, bedroom, and small sitting area for entertaining
An office for Sheryl

Between the two homes
A beautiful garden
A stone path joining the two homes
A small area for outside entertaining with a grill and a bistro table and chairs

Budget
$175,000

“We know there are a lot of specifics,” Latoya adds. “But this is kind of our dream home.” What a great smile…charismatic, that one.
“I think I can do it,” you add. “So you want one story, and two builds…a main home and a smaller build for Loretta with an office for Sheryl. You specify colors for the interior of the main home. Any specifics for the smaller build?”
Loretta speaks for the first time. “Well, honey, you’re the professional. But I do love flowers and I prefer pastels. I’d love a great view of the garden outside.”
“The office can be whatever combines nicely with Loretta’s small home,” Sheryl adds. “But I would like a separate entrance to the office so I don’t have to disturb her if I work early or late.”
“Oh, it’s no trouble, Sheryl. I just know how my boy snores…” Loretta teases.
“So I think that’s everything,” Derek, embarrassed, ends the conversation. “Plus, I think the band is about to come on.”
“OK, I’ll have it for you next week,” you give Derek a smile and help him out.
“Oh, honey, make sure you get some rest! One week, that is faaast!” Loretta says.
Each member of the family shakes your hand. Loretta offers a hug.
“What a nice family,” you think to yourself. The wheels in your head start turning as the music begins.

Build-n-Share Challenge # 7 - The Biscuits

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

As the door opens your nose takes in the sweetest smell. Honey! And Biscuits!
You look up to see a smiling couple walking through the door, and the female appears to be bringing you a plate of warm biscuits with honey!
“Now that’s the way to butter me up for a build,” you think to yourself.
“Hello there,” a friendly man shakes your hand and shares a warm smile. “This is my wife Honey, and I’m Abraham. We’re The Biscuits.” He laughs as he adds, “And to make sure you don’t forget us, we’ve brought you a pleasant reminder. Honey’s biscuits cannot be beat! We’re hoping they’ll bring in guests from miles around!”
“Now, Ham,” Honey teases, “I’m sorry. My husband sometimes gets a little ahead of himself. We’re coming to you today because we have a dream of opening our own bed and breakfast. The biscuits will be a special treat for our guests. And we hope you’ll enjoy some this morning, too.” She graciously hands you the plate.
“Our old home is just getting too lonely for us,” Ham picks up the conversation. “We’d love to remodel it into a cozy bed and breakfast. Do you do remodels?”
He’s caught you a little unaware. You were hoping for a little more detail to allow enough time to enjoy the remainder of your biscuit. Getting the words out despite your full mouth, which you politely shield with your hand, you manage to choke out “Sure!”
“See, Ham? Everyone told us we were coming to the right place!”
“OK, well, what we would like is to convert our home. Some know it as ‘The Old Spenster Place.’ We’re from nearby Riverview. Anyway, we’d like to leave all of the exterior walls untouched, as the place is a bit of a local landmark. You are welcome to change the landscaping and surrounding fences, though. But most of your work will take place inside. We’d like you to completely overhaul it. On the first floor, we want some quiet places for guests to unwind at the end of their busy day touring the town.”
“Don’t forget the kitchen! I’d love a beautiful kitchen for cooking, and it would be nice if it could open onto the back patio, where we will serve breakfast each morning and an afternoon snack.”
“I was getting to the kitchen, Honey!” Ham chuckles, “Yes, the kitchen is a critical part of the home. We’d also like at least one half bath on this floor, if you can manage it. On the second floor, we’d like to offer four guestrooms. We’d like two of them to be tailored to couples. The other two should be for families with children; maybe one for a family with a baby…”
“Oh, and please make sure that one includes a fridge so they don’t have to trek up and down the stairs for bottles!” Honey chimes in again.
Ham picks up where she leaves off. You get a feeling they do this a lot. “And the other family room should have a single bed, too, for a child or teen visitor. All of the guestrooms should have their own full bath as well. And we’d like each of them to have access to one of the beautiful balconies with at least two chairs outside their room for enjoying the rising or setting sun.”
“The final thing you may be wondering is, ‘Where are you going to stay?’ Well, there is a garage on property, and it should be enough for the two of us. We’ll be out-of-the-way but close enough to check in on things and be tracked down if anyone needs anything. We just need a bed, full bath, and small kitchen with dining table in our little home. If you want to change the garage front, we’d like to take out the garage door and add windows and a door to make it look a little more like the entrance to a home,” Honey adds.
“We would like the home to cost no more than $275,000 once it is all furnished and complete,” Abraham adds the last important detail.
“I’ve never done a remodel,” you remark. “I know of The Old Spenster Place. A beautiful build. I will leave the outside walls untouched, but I’d like to work on that landscape a bit and maybe change the bordering fence, as you suggested. I can’t wait to see inside!”
“Well, enjoy that plate of biscuits from Honey, and let us know if you have any questions!” Ham says as he begins to help Honey out of her chair.
You stare at the beautiful plate and the pile of biscuits remaining. “These are all for me?” you ask, stunned.
“Oh yes, dear. We hope you’ll enjoy them.”
“Woot,” you think to yourself, “snacks for tonight’s marathon of old reruns of The A-Team.”
“Thanks so much,” is all you share out loud.

A note to those who saw the original BISCUITS post:
The original lot had a bug pointed out to me by Sparkle last night. For this reason, I have changed the lot to this new one, which I actually think is better. You can download the home here, or locate it in Riverview across from the island with all the community lots. You will need to evict The Spensters if you use this method, however.

P.S.In your upload, I would probably put in the description that it is an EA Remodel so people don't think you are "plagiarizing," even though a vast majority of the build will be new.

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

A starter for the Calientes!

Looking up at the man in front of your desk you see the largest green eyes you’ve ever seen before.
“Hello,” the man shakes your hand. “We’re the Calientes.”
The name seems somewhat familiar…but you can’t quite place your finger on from where.
“Hello to you all,” you say to the three beaming faces behind him.
“This is my wife, Nighat, and our daughters Nina and Dina. My name is Flamenco,” he shakes your hand again with the full introduction.
“You see, the spa in our town was recently bulldozed, as little rabbit hole lots with all the essentials in one place are so popular these days. So we swooped in and bought the land. It’s a small parcel, only 21x22, but it should be enough for our new home, we think.”
“Oh, that shouldn’t be a problem. We can always build up!”
He laughs, “What we would like is a 2-bedroom home. One for my wife and I, and one for the girls to share. They are very close.”
You look at the two, who blush a little.
“They even dress the same, except Dina always has to have her purple and Nina prefers pink. We’d like to incorporate the two colors into their room. And we’d like it to be a room that they will enjoy until they leave us for college, which will be way too soon, I’m afraid. If you could give each girl a little area of her own, that would be nice, too.”
“Any request for your room,” you ask.
“Oh, nothing in particular. It’s always nice to have a bathroom attached. Maybe one that has a door to the hall or whatever room it is next to, if that works. Don’t want the visitors traipsing through the bedroom to use the facilities!”
He laughs at his own joke. Nighat looks a little embarrassed.
“As far as colors, I’m not sure my wife and mine go together too well…brown and black.” He laughs again, “but if you want to give it a go, you are more than welcome.”
Nighat chimes in, “but only in the bedroom, please. We don’t want the house to be too dark.”
“OK, anything else?”
“A little yard for the girls to play would be nice. Otherwise, we’ll leave it up to your capable hands.”
And with that, the family turns to go.
Each of the girls gives a fleeting glance over her shoulder. Those eyes…so unusual.
You grab your keys to go check out the lot.

Some notes:
This week’s home should be built on the 21x22 spa lot in Sunset Valley. It is to be a family starter with a value no more than $20,000. In your final upload, if you label it as a starter, please clarify that it is a family starter so those with just a single sim will not expect it to be move-in ready for their small family. If you are building in a neighborhood where you also play, you will want to place the spa elsewhere in your town so your sim can visit. I recommend starting a new town just for building, however.

A note about depreciation:
There was a lot of stress last time about depreciation. The only rule is this: Please do not play the lot to devalue it. If you exit the home in build mode, some of the items will depreciate (go down in cost). This is absolutely OK! I just don’t want people playing the home for 2 sim weeks to fit in a bunch more items. This is intended to be a starter, so money is a little tight but adequate.

Starter tips:
I have recently written a starter tutorial. You may find a few tips that will help in cutting some costs here. I have yet to write the next two, but one of the biggest additional tips I would give you is to buy the cheapest of everything and make it look better through CAS. Look for more on this in my next two tutorials, which will probably be out next week.
