When they arrived, the cottage was dark and still, save for a single light glowing faintly in the window. Dismounting, Arthur approached the door, his heart beating with quiet determination. He knocked softly, and after a moment, the door creaked open to reveal Ella, her eyes wide with surprise.
Your Majesty,” she whispered, clearly astonished to see him again, especially at such an hour. “What… what brings thee here?”
Arthur smiled warmly, his voice gentle. “I have come with a proposal, Ella. One that could change thy life, if thou art willing to trust in me.”
Ella stepped back, allowing them to enter, her expression a mixture of curiosity and trepidation. “A proposal, my lord?”
Arthur nodded as he entered, Merlin and Lancelot close behind. “Aye, Ella. But first, I must ask—dost thou wish for a chance to escape the life thou hast known? To be free of thy stepmother’s cruelty, and to claim a future of thy own making?”
Ella’s eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat. “I… I do, my lord, more than anything. But how? I am but a servant, bound to this place by duty and by fear. How could I ever escape?”
Merlin stepped forward, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “With a little help from magic, and a lot of courage, my dear. If thou art willing, I can make thee a lady for a night—one who could win the favor of the court and the protection of the king. But the choice must be thine, for it is no small risk.”
Ella looked between the three men, her heart pounding. The chance they offered was beyond anything she had ever dreamed, yet it was also terrifying. But as she met Arthur’s gaze, she saw in him a sincerity that made her believe, for the first time, that such a future could be hers.
“I… I accept,” she said at last, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and hope. “I will do whatever it takes, my lord.”
Arthur smiled, a sense of relief washing over him. “Then it is settled. We shall prepare thee for the Midsummer Celebration, and there, thou shalt make thy mark upon Camelot. Together, we shall ensure that thy stepfamily can never harm thee again.”
As they began to discuss the details of the plan, Ella felt a spark of hope ignite within her, a light that had long been dimmed by the cruelty of her past. For the first time in as long as she could remember, she dared to dream of a future where she could be free, where she could be herself. And she knew, deep in her heart, that with King Arthur by her side, anything was possible.
