What's so attractive about the Graveyard?

Every night the Townie Sims of Sunset Valley will meet in the Graveyard. I thought nothing about this because they would arrive and then leave. Entire families do this nightly, much like when they (as townies) go to a community lot, the first one there waits for the others to arrive; and then they leave (if ghosts are out, sometimes they stay to talk). When I started playing other EA worlds, I noticed the Sims continued this trend. So, I figured EA may have put something (some sort of programming) in the cemetery which calls to them, although the times when they make the trip varies from late night 11pm to early morning 2-3am.

Recently, I needed a very small basic world to develop a few Sim families in so, I dug out an old world released back in August 2010 named Los Simles by Tenshiak (TSR). I renovated the world to suit my needs which included demolishing the original Graveyard and building my own. And, guess what?? Every night the Townie Sims of this world gather to meet in the Graveyard (there are no ghosts). This is a player made world, so now I just find it odd.

I am almost certain some programming exists which causes this behavior, and it is tied to the Graveyard coding. Still, I would love to know what. So, does anyone have a clue or theory as to what's so attractive at the Graveyard which keeps them going there nightly? And, why the Graveyard? Is there something in Sim history which makes this a special place?

  • I dunno...@igazor, my graveyard seems to be rather "dead". Sorry, I'll see myself out.

  • I have a save in Midnight Hollow that the townies visit the graveyard. I only noticed it as one of my sims lived next door to the graveyard and I noticed groups visiting it periodically. I kinda thought it was a MH thing since I'd never seen it before. MH is a particularly unusual town with unusual townies. It is usually only one or two families at a time. I had a couple of families I rotated playing and noticed when I was not controlling the other they would cruise the graveyard at least once a week.

I've never seen this in any other town I played in. I do see sims visit occasionally, but not like what happens in MH. I have a save in Bridgeport that I've been playing about 8 months or so, and never see it there. I did disable the bar at the graveyard by removing it though. Got enough bars in that town! My save has all the original townies in it, plus those I've added. All they do is fall in love, marry, have kids, divorce, fall in love, have kids, marry and then divorce. I definitely think they coded the relationships different in BP. It is the rare sim that has stayed with the original partner in that town.

@bekkasan - To me, it makes sense that the Sims of this town would visit the Graveyard given its 'spooky' type of atmosphere and unique Sims. In all honesty, my copy of MH is currently uninstalled, so I can't say if its going on there or not. I gave up on Bridgeport, the vampire population ran me out of town (plus, I only wanted it for the instruments, hadn't intended on seriously playing it). I haven't played or explored Island Paradise (Isla Paradiso) or Supernaturals (Moonlight Falls), I bought them for their interactions and items, so I can't say if it happens in these worlds either.

The one place I thought it was odd to see Townies out at the graveyard was in Lunar Lakes. That cemetery sits much further than the one in Bridgeport, which sits pretty far out if you ask me; and there's nothing there! It seems your MH Sims behave like my Base Game Sims; a few at a time. Maybe the reason the graveyard currently has such a high attraction level as @ScottDemon says, is possibly to modify some older coding (**assuming this action was coded in-in the first place).

In my current game there are only 14 Sims who live in Los Simles (the rest are game generated Sims who serve as 'fillers' and reside elsewhere). Of that 14, 5 are in my current household, so every night 9 Sims make their way to the graveyard. Since posting this thread, I now go to the graveyard every night to say goodnight to each one of them when they show up :).
  • Well from what I understand, the sims 3 has a system that when a lot is viewed and the items are loaded(at certain times of the day for different types of lots) then as long as the lot is public and does not have the "No Visitors Allowed", then sims will actively go towards the lot you are viewing, I've seen it with several lots and not just lots I was going to visit, just general lots that I would look at. Seems like a method the game may have to make sure that if you view a lot it looks populated and not just a barren wasteland.

@jonny522 - Yes, that is a mechanic of the game to 'call' Sims to the lot where your Sim is (unless they are there already). I'd say most times it works and, sometimes it doesn't (anyone whose ever been to a Late Night Hot Spot only to see a ghost town can agree with me on that).

The way I discovered the Townie Sims heading to the Graveyard, was not by being at the Graveyard. It was actually by accident. My Sim was living in the Shotgun Shack (that might not be the actual name, I forget), when I saw Thornton Wolff rushing past the house. It was late, my Sims were sleep, so I decided to follow him (being nosy) to see where he was hurrying off to. He walked past the Sekemoto home, got on the little footpath, then he veered to the right off of the path and started climbing the hill. By this time I was really wondering where he was going. This route took him to the front of the Graveyard, where upon reaching it, he called up a Big Lemon and drove off. The next time I picked up on it, I was in map view and saw traffic pulling up to the Graveyard and then leaving right after.
