Though I must say The shotgun is a waste of space (I think it is 30*40 lot).
That is the reason I like it, plenty of room to expand and you're not stuck on a postage stamp sized lot, loads of potential for a rags to riches. :)- 5782341b77vlNew SpectatorDunno why EA called it a shotgun style.
A shotgun house is long (normally 12ftwide) with the rooms all on one side of the house (opposite of the front and back doors)! The name comes from the fact that you can fire a gun from the front porch, have the bullet travel thru the house, and out the back door, without hitting a wall. Most shotgun houses are one story, though there's some two story shotgun houses as well.
The Sims3 shotgun house is not long, nor are the rooms to one side. There's not even a back door on it either. I guess they didn't have any floorplans of an actual shotgun house when they made the game. - ZeeGee1Seasoned Hotshot

@CK213 & @ZeeGee , Fans of The Monotone too I see! I used to start pretty much every one of my Sims in that house if I was doing a start out dirt poor challenge. I have redone that poor house so much!
@Charlottesmom The Monotone! That's what it's called. :) And me too, in pretty much every color combination known to man. - ZeeGee1Seasoned HotshotOh wow, new addiction - Fake Houses, Real Awesome, AND all the wonderful CC it links to!

I especially like that the Shotgun house is on such a large lot, because I almost always have my sims gardening, and before I got Seasons, I always put their exercise equipment and other skill items outdoors. It's the one I always used to use in SV, until I started using the 2 bedroom starter house from the Generations library selections instead.
I almost always use Dogpatch in Riverview for the same reason, nice size, large lot, good for gardening, though it looks quite run down, and I prefer to fix it up CASt. In Appaloosa Plains, I love Pacer Place. In Hidden Springs, my favorite is Handcrafted Masterpiece, though I especially like the Country Dream Cottage, though at more than $30,000 it isn't a starter. Sometimes I'll cheat my sims into it to start, if I'm starting with a couple or a ready made family. My favorite in IP is Seaside Escape, which is over the water on a stilted foundation, on the smaller of the two large islands. In Moonlight Falls, my favorite is the Craftsman's Mansion, though for a single sim I'll have to remove some of the furniture to make it affordable, or cheat them into it, as it's over $19,000. But the Comfortable Classic is my favorite no-cheat starter there. My favorite starter in Starlight Shores is the compact cottage.
Lately though, I mostly use houses I've built myself. "5782341b77vl;c-16200689" wrote:

That's true ... But I can see what people are getting at.
I always called them "cracker boxes" ... Just straight, no frills and a simple design.
I have never been too fond of them and they feel like a prison cell in some ways, with small room and cramped living areas.
That's probably why most of my builds have open floor plans.
My Sims will live on an open lot in a tent before they will stuff themselves into a tiny box ... :D
Once they earn enough money for a house and are ready for a family (if they want one) ... Then they get a nice house.

Cool, nice to know the meaning behind the name. I do wonder about some of the names of the EA items, some are truly bizarre.- I really hate the layout of almost all EA houses, and rarely use them. If I do, it's only after extensive remodeling. Besides, I like building houses.
So, for starter houses I usually use my Boxo Generico. I made a whole range of Boxo homes, from the 2 bed 1 bath, no garage, no nuthin' Generico, up to the Supreme with 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, garage, and full basement. Also, mirror-image versions of them. I uploaded them all to the exchange, but some of them have been purged.
Another thing I did in Midnight Hollow was take one of the larger homes and convert it into a boarding house. I used the Late Night style apartments to give my sims a couple rooms and a bathroom, then I made the rest of the house public areas or NPC doors. That way you can live in a nice house w/o having to purchase the whole thing. - This one from Bridgeport is not too bad:

I had to use CC lights.
