Who else dislikes the way romantic interests were made in this game?

Romantic interests system...breaking up families since 2009...

No but seriously, Sims get falsely accused of cheating or get bad reputations because of several (autonomous) little flings in the past and it's annoying. A stable, sweet relationship can easily hit the rocks when the 'accuse of cheating' action shows up, the sim they 'cheated' with being someone you had no idea about and long gone. The 'ask to be friends' interaction is misplaced as well, it shouldn't be in the 'Mean' category, neither should 'Break Up' or 'Divorce' in my opinion. The romantic interest system is random and messy, best it didn't exist at all and the only way one could be officially romantic with one another is to be there gf/bf!

Speaking of which, saw a mod from MTS that removes this, but it was last updated in 2014 and it says 1.67 compatible. It also conflicts with some data which could cause more conflict in relationships...I don't know if I'm so keen. I can survive without a mod though, it's just one of many things that make me think, "for something so small, why couldn't the developers make this better?" haha (the other things I have to complain about include emotions in general..superb job in the sims 2, not so much sims 3.)

  • I only encounter this when I didn’t pay attention at prom and my sim kissed some guy or girl in the rabbithole system. That most definitely is annoying.
  • I understand what romantic interests are and actually like how it is included in the game. But I can see the older audience wanting a gameplay feature without strings attached to resemble a different kind of relationship in the real world. However, this is a Teen rated game, not a M rated one where gameplay elements can definitely get even more mature. Personally, I do think the majority of Sim fans are older/mature now so I don't see the big deal with trying a more realistic and mature life simulator. Did you know that TS3 age demographic is between 16-24? And is why the game comes off as the most mature in the series.

TS2 sold 1 million copies in 10 days while TS3 sold 1.4 million copies in 7 days. Those statistics mean something because clearly it shows who is the majority of the fanbase who supported TS3. Curious as how one would think TS4 could top that when they go and target teenage girls (what I read I think) and by the way that's really weird when TS/TS2/TS3 has been for teen and up for males and females. Talk about losing focus. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

The thing about emotions in TS3 is that some completely miss out on all the subtle cues of the A.I. The human-like emotions on a deeper meaning are there but only the observant will see it. The Sims themselves are the most improved and advanced, A.I. wise, I've ever witnessed and yes I played TS and TS2 which are two of most best video games of all time to me.

The way the romantic system is handled in the Sims 3 is the reason I downloaded my first mod from Nraas.
That was after I discovered, that the lifetime reward "no jealousy" is broken. I just wanted to play a game of four consenting adult sims living together and... well. The reward doesn´t work with the attraction system that was introduced with generations.

I was pretty upset at that point, enough to break my "no mods" mindset (I´m actully very happy about that now). So I downloaded the mod that shall not be named and played the game I wanted to play by setting jelousy to "none". The "no jelousy" reward actually helps a little bit in that case, because with only the mod, the sims still show signs of discomfort (in their thought bubbles and face expressions), when everyone has the reward there are none.

I do not think, sims (or RL people for that matter) shouldn´t feel and express jealousy if there is a real reason for it, but a sim divorcing their significant other on their own because the other one kissed someone else on their highschool ball is just plain ridiculous.

On the other hand, the attraction system and the resulting jelousy can be pretty entertaining, but on this scale, I want to decide how my sims react.
  • I agree that kissing someone at the school Prom years before you married is not grounds for divorce. In my opinion many of the "new" features added with EPs introduced annoying autonomous behaviour and rampant ridiculous wishes. It makes sense that in order to make a new EP stand out from what a simmer was playing previously that there had to be obvious changes to the game but they are only "cute" if you don't intend to play the game for years. Thankfully brilliant modders stepped in and gave me back the game I want to play

I wouldn´t be playing the game anymore, if it weren´t for the wonderful people at Nraas and MTS, easy as that.
On the other hand, I think it´s a huge compliment to the original developers of the game, to evoke such dedication to make it even better. Kind of.
  • @Waterdragon I, too, would not be playing without mods. In fact, I was about to pack it in after playing for nearly two years because I didn't have enough control over the game. The original developers definitely did something right and I am glad that modders also thought the game was worth their efforts.
  • The only problem I have with Romantic Interests in this game is that won't let my human (non-plumbot) sims have love affairs with their coffee makers. Disallowing that kind of romance, even if it were to be a bit one-sided, is not realistic. I wouldn't care about the cheating accusation issues if this were possible.

If a mod is made, intended, or declared to be safe for any of Patches 1.66, 1.67, and 1.69, it will work exactly the same on all three patch levels because the game files are the same among them. The only exception would be Core Mods as those verify the internal build numbers on startup and can display a warning if they are mismatched. There are only six Core Mods for TS3 in popular usage, NRaas ErrorTrap is one.
