AMD Driver Timeout Issue

Hi there,

I'm getting repeated graphics driver timeouts and game crashes when playing the Sims 3 on Steam.

I've heavily researched online, and here are my specs and attempted solutions if you have any leads...

  1. Smooth patch installed, FPS capped at 175fps on my UWQHD resolution (3440x1440).
  2. All downloadable content disabled.
  3. iGPU disabled in BIOS.
  4. Game launched through TS3W shortcut.
  5. New world created.

Specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
RAM: 2x32GB DDR5 - 6000MHz EXPO
GPU: Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB

It seems to happen at random, and can go as far as to disable 2/3 of my monitors or hang for minutes on end on a black screen. The game can crash, or it can restore.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Cam

  • Shnoug  As a test, please try playing with only one monitor connected.  Restart your computer after disconnecting the others (or remove them with the computer shut down).

If that doesn't help, try capping fps at 60 and playing at 1920x1080 or something close.

I'm not saying you have to do either of these going forward, only that it would be helpful to know whether either one helped.

If neither makes a difference, please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the graphics driver.  This is more thorough than a regular update or uninstall/reinstall.  Here's how:

If that doesn't help either, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

I will do all the following within 8 hours. Thanks.

I meant to update that the dump files in the Sims 3 folder mention "The thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access". They all reflect this error.

    I appreciate your assistance.

I can confirm that after playing for 2 hours with no crash, capping the FPS at 60 through the smooth fix mod resolved this issue.

Thank you so much for the help, puzzleaddict.
