What Auto-Sensor would do is look at all your pets Hunger meter. Once it got low enough, it would fill the bowl so that they could eat. It doesn't do that now.
EDIT: Looks like I'll be testing the three gambling tables instead after stumbling upon a report about them being treated like dining tables on a specific lot setting.
Yes, I know how it was supposed to work, but it never worked like that for me. The bowl would empty and never refill, regardless of my pets hunger motive level.
