I don't have a Mac so I don't know if the systems are the same ... But it's possible this could solve your immediate problem.
Holding [ctrl]+[alt] ... Press [del] ... Control-Alt-Delete may interrupt the loop and provide you with an options screen ... That options screen may provide the option of Task Manager.
Should you be able to select the Task Manager ... And it opens ... You should be able to see the processes running near the top. If all those "shoulds" happen to be available ... You can then select the 'Sims 3' process which may then say 'Not Responding' ... Should that be the case, drop to the bottom of the Task Manager and select [End Task]
Warning ... The process described above will not save anything since the last time you saved your game ... But it should discontinue the operations of the game. Also ... In the options screen, if the Task Manager won't boot and loops you back to the game ... One of the options should be 'Log Out'. That will simply log the active account out ... Almost like Restarting ... It won't save your game, but it is better than simply turning your computer off and hoping for the best. When you log back in, your game won't be running anymore.
Hope you find a solution ... Sorry if what I offered doesn't help ... Happy Simming ... ❤️
