So I had the sims 3 seasons when it came out on the 13th of November but I didn't have the sims 3 so I couldn't play it so I waited intil Christmas and I got sims 3 and late night I installed sims 3 ...

in answer to the hoilday part of your question no sims cannot travel for a holiday (unless you have world adventures ) but if your sim has a job they will get a holiday which is just a day off work to celebrate the holidays are called love day = valintines snowflake day = christmas and lesiure day which would be like a bank holiday
something else running in the background ? hmm it could be the launcher trying to work, try this hold ctrl+alt+del which will open up task manager there you will what is running if it is the launcher just hit end task once it closes the launcher IF that is what is running then restart your computer see if the game will work then if not post back here
