Since I don't know from which original design each of my CAS custom content files comes from and I can't spend all my money downloading the whole Sims 3 store (and I highly doubt all the people who downloaded CAS content from the simsresource own all the Sims 3 store content) there must be a way around this. Has this problem or something similar ever occurred to anyone?

I do not use custom content so I am not sure about this issue. I will ask the other helpers to check this thread in case they have any ideas.
I do know, however, that it is possible to install content that contains items from missing expansion packs without necessarily seeing the big exclamation mark. For example, last week I installed a world that I know contains items from an expansion pack and a stuff pack that I do not own, but there was no exclamation mark. So it is possible that this may be an issue with at least some of your content.
