Dragon Valley Won't Download

Specs:

Macbook Pro, OS Mojave, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB Memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000

Sims 3 Version 1.67.2.024001

Ambitions, Generations, Late Night, Pets, Seasons, and Supernatural Expansion packs installed and working.

Barnacle Bay and Monte Vista downloaded through thesims3.com and installed in previous years, working.

Last night, I purchased Dragon Valley Gold Edition. I received the email with the code, redeemed it on thesims3.com so it shows up under Purchase History. I normally use Google Chrome and tried to download it. The sims 3 Launcher loaded but there is no download coming up for Dragon Valley. So, I tried it again, still nothing. Restarted, nothing. Looked up a bunch of answers here including clearing cache, using Firefox, tried all of it again... nothing.

Used the contact us function to get an EA person to help. They had me clear Origin from my Macbook using a thread instructing 'the hard way' to remove it completely from the system. I followed the instructions and reinstalled Origin. Did a restart, downloaded from thesims3.com using Firefox... nothing.

Went back into an EA chat with another person who reiterated clearing the cache in firefox. Trying to launch from Origin first and then downloading from the browser, however it seems like my computer is just trying to relaunch the launcher again when I do this and when left alone and checked on a few moments later, nothing is happening.

I'm starting to believe it is my launcher which is busted. Can anyone confirm?

My game is still playing just fine, I just can't seem to get Dragon Valley to show up anywhere for me to be able to install it.

@FallThruStardust  Sorry it's been a while, but this issue has been a bit stubborn.  I borrowed a computer running Mojave to test, and I had no trouble downloading any of my store worlds.  (That doesn't include DV though.)  The same is true for the EA community manager who tested, and he could indeed download DV.  On the other hand, another Mac user with Mojave couldn't download anything from the store.  We're still trying to troubleshoot.

In the meantime, another player found a workaround and was able to download Hidden Springs.  (Here's the thread.)  The approach is to launch the game and go to the Main Menu, then sign in.  Click on the three dots in the lower left corner, and select Open Downloads Dashboard.

You'll see a list of everything you own, or perhaps just the items you haven't installed.  (I tested on a clean game folder, so there was no store content at all.)  If you see a particularly long list of items, you can click on the Item header (in the red box), and the list will appear in alphabetical order.  Use the arrows (green box) to navigate.

Dragon Valley should start downloading and then install on its own, at which point you'll be able to choose it from the dropdown menu.

And please let me know whether this works or not.  It's fine for me, but then I can download everything the normal way, so I'm not a good test.  Either way, we still want to find a way to fix the problem.

  • @FallThruStardust  The store can be a bit glitchy at times, so occasionally the only thing to do is walk away and try again in a few hours.  You've already covered most of the troubleshooting steps, but there are a couple of things I can add.  First, there's no need to involve Origin in the process.  You can launch TS3, or in this case just open the launcher, from its icon in Applications.

So what I would suggest is clearing Firefox's cache (again), opening the launcher, and then trying to download Dragon Valley.  In particular, I've found that I always need to open the launcher first in order for a download to start.  If it doesn't work, please make sure there isn't already a DV file in Downloads inside your TS3 game folder.  (You might have a corrupt file in there.)

Also, Firefox has recently started blocking the popups from the store.  I haven't gone through all my privacy settings to figure out which one is the culprit, but I at least get a small yellow banner across the top of the browser window letting me know.  I can click on it to allow the popup, but there's also an option to not see the yellow banner at all; perhaps you already have this option enabled.  Try unblocking popups or setting an exception for the store.  To see the option, click on the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner, then select Content Blocking and scroll down to Permissions.

I'm sure that most if not all of this applies to Chrome as well, although I never use it to download from the store.  Firefox is generally more reliable, but you could try both browsers.

If none of this helps, drag your entire TS3 game folder out of Documents and onto your desktop.  Open the launcher to spawn a clean folder, then try to download Dragon Valley.  If it works, that means there's a corrupt file somewhere in your old game folder that's preventing the download.  You can rebuild your game folder later, if you want; this just means moving your important content from the old folder to the new one and leaving behind stale cache files.  First though, move the DV file from Downloads inside your new game folder to Downloads inside your old folder.  Once you remove the new folder and put the old one back in Documents\EA, you should be able to install DV through the launcher as normal.

If you need to move your content to a clean game folder, it's pretty straightforward.  Just move the files on the following list that you want to keep.  Be sure to grab ccmerged.package from DCBackup, as this file is necessary to make your premium store content work.

  • I appreciate the help, unfortunately, my issue is still not resolved.

I moved the Sims 3 folder to my desktop, cleared the Firefox cache, and then started the game launcher. The movement of the folder did reflect in the launcher showing absolutely no downloaded content where the list used to show everything. Looking into the finder at the folder that is now on my desktop, there is no content in the download folder that is labeled as Dragon Valley, DV, etc... and nothing in the download folder shows that anything was downloaded in recent dates.

Using the cleared Firefox browser, I logged in and went to Purchase history to download the content again. This prompted Sims 3 to try to open the launcher again. There is still no downloaded content visible in the launcher and in the now clean Sims 3 folder, there is no content in the download folder there as well.

    I'm still stuck.

    Any other recommendations?

@FallThruStardust  I suppose the issue could be due to the store patches not being present in your game folder.  Normally the content downloads anyway or throws an error in the browser, but I don't know how Dragon Valley specifically behaves.  (I don't own it.)   The patches used to be offered by the launcher, but maybe a year and a half ago, that changed.  They're part of TS3's program files on an install that's patched to 1.69, but the Mac version of the game only goes to 1.67, so there's no way to download them from EA.  Please see this thread for a workaround:

It's best to get rid of your new game folder, clear Firefox's cache again, and have the launcher open before pressing Download, just to eliminate all other potential sources of the issue.

If this doesn't help, I can ask someone from EA to look into it, but it will probably be a couple of days.

  • If it takes a few days, I don't mind.

Honestly, I should concentrate on getting some work done. I would just like to utilize my game that I purchased sometime soon.

Any further replies are wonderful and thank you for the suggestions you've given me so far.

  • This was the perfect solution. I started the game, made sure I was logged in, clicked the 3 dots for the download menu and there was Dragon Valley! I’ve installed it and now it’s running!

Im floored that it was so easy after so much hard work previously, but thank you for spending the time on this and giving me a work around.

Thank you! And I’ll remember this for any future store download issues, just in case.

@FallThruStardust  Thanks so much for confirming it worked.  Hopefully someone will figure out what the issue is, but in the meantime, it's great to know that there's a workaround available.
