Error Code 12 + Missing World

As of two days ago, I've been completely unable to save my game. I haven't done anything differently--no mods, no weird downloads. So, I tried deleting the corrupt files(the "bad" saves), leaving everything but the backup files in the Saves folder. My game seemed to save twice...then faced the error again. Then I followed the instructions from this thread: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/634707.page I had forgotten to add the files from my Origin folder...and it deleted my family...although all the backup files are still in the Saves folder. I added the Origin information, following the same instructions, and still nothing. Needless to say, I'm devestated and incredibly angry with how much money and time I've put into The Sims. I really need some help help this error and trying to restore my family.... I don't know whether to revert my settings to the original ones or leave them...I'm just confused and need some help.

In the meantime, I decided to start a new family, just to tie myself over and keep myself sane. I decided to try Barnacle Bay, which I purchased some time ago. It's in my download history, which I downloaded twice after not seeing it as a new game option...and it's still not an option after restarting my PC. Seriously? What else can go wrong with my game? So I also need help getting Barnacle Bay added to my Worlds.

At this point, I'm ready to rip my hair out and throw these games at the wall. It's been one issue after another, glitch after glitch, and it's no longer worth the amount of money I've put into it. If I can't get some kind of resolution, this will be the last time I invest in EA.

  • I have 8 GB of RAM and it's a 64 bit processor.

As for the world, yes, it downloaded just fine.

  • If the backup of my family is still there in the folder, how come it isn't in the game? I was able to save just fine before.

  • Okay...I figured out the Barnacle Bay problem, so that's no longer an issue. But I'm still concerned about my saving issue. I definitely meet all of the system requirements. Also, why has my Moonlight Falls family file completely disappeared? The backup file is stil in the Saves folder. Is there any hope of restoring it?

How big is your savegame ?

even on a 64bit system you can run out of RAM. The game is a 32 bit application so even on a 64 bit system, it can only use 4 GB of the 8 you have.

Try monitoring the RAM use of your game with the task manager.

Do you have a file called .bad in your saves folder ?

  • The backup file as a whole is 2.34 GB. There are no other folders but the backup file, so no, no .bad files. I did not delete the "Saves" folder...it seems to have deleted itself, and it's not in my trashcan. WEIRD. Is there any way to retreive the family?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by monitoring the RAM usage. How might I do that, and how would that change my game play? Would doing so keep my game from crashing?

Does your backup file have the ending .backup ? Then you need to remove that ending, otherwise the game won't recognize it.

While you play you can use the task manager to see how much RAM the game uses. Use the 'process' tab in the taks manager (windows program) and there it should have a colum for the RAM. If get to around 3.5 MB, you'll get error 12. It will just help you determine if the size of your savegame really is the problem for Error 12. It's more of a diagnosis tool than a solution.

2.5 GB is a lot. You probably have a lot of junk data accumulated in that save file so it errors out. Options you have is to use external third party mods to weed out some of the unused stuff, especially the memories but I can't really talk about that here (how that is done) or just pack-up your family to a new game (once you're able to see the savegame again).
