I'm having the same issue - also an iMac owner. The game was working fine first thing this morning, then everything went kaput.
Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB

From what I'm reading on the Sims 3 board, probably every mac user on the planet is affected.
Did anyone try cutting the I-net connection and play offline ?

Yes! I just turned off wi-fi and got it to load! It's still loading in the background, so turning wi-fi back on didn't hurt. Thanks for the suggestion! If only I hadn't wasted my entire lunch hour trying to fix it, I could play right now... haha.

Yap. Was just coming back to say that this is a valuble solution for DVD users.
