Help on getting the sims 3 to recognise graphics card on Rog Ally X?

Hi all! So, as the title suggests, could anyone help me with getting the sims 3 to recognise my Rog ally X's Graphic card/processor? If it is a different process and if there are specific changes to follow? Previously, I had followed a video on how to do so and.. well, it didn't work. It just made the entire world turn white afterwards. Even after numerous attempts. Now, this could be because I hadn't done it right (Which I wouldn't be surprised about tbf) It's just more confusing as the Rog Ally has a separate processor compared to a typical AMD card on a PC; I don't really know what to put in as a result. And well, i'm hoping if anyone has successfully gotten the game to recognise the Rog Ally Xs graphics (Or even on the Steamdeck) - Could maybe give me some insight please lol (I had also downloaded the Nexusmods GPU add-on to get it to automatically recognise the card.. no luck again).

(Also the processor is a AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme)

  • omyssz8fi2ep  First of all, please repair the game, if you haven't already, to undo the changes you made to the .sgr files.  It's always best to start with a fresh set of files when the previous edit didn't work.

Please also go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3, open DeviceConfig, copy the first 40 or so lines (stop at Options), and paste them into a reply here.  You can delete your user and computer names, about 20 lines down, if you want; the file doesn't contain any other personal information.

The name of the driver is only AMD Radeon Graphics - nothing else to specify which one (Such as mine), is this what could be the problem? Thanks again.

  • omyssz8fi2ep  The name of the driver isn't a problem, and in fact the game doesn't care at all.  The only details that matter are the vendor and device IDs, which tell the game what GPU you have and therefore how to rate it.

Please repair Sims 3 if you haven't already, so you're working with the default .sgr files.  Open GraphicsCards.sgr, in one of these locations (depending on the type of install) by default:

    C:\Program Files\EA Games\The Sims 3\Game\Bin
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Sims 3\Game\Bin

Right at the top, in the second line, change the device ID from 0x6798 to 0x15bf , but don't touch anything else.  This will trick the game into thinking you have an HD 7900-series GPU.  We can add your actual device name if you want, and feel free to ask if you'd like, but this quick and dirty method works equally well.

As a side note, the white screen when loading a save, after editing the .sgr files, is often the result of a deleted or incorrect punctuation mark.  I got that once when I deleted the second " and typed in my own, not realizing that mine was slanted instead of straight.  If you do delete something, it's best to copy the same thing from another line of the file to make sure you're getting the right character.

So, I had changed the numbers to 0x15bf and unfortunately, it appears it hasn't worked (found: 0, matched: 0). Would it be worthwhile to try the GPU add-on from NexusMods again? Or maybe the name of the device? Overall, the game runs fine anyway - I'm not too worried if this doesn't work, the only real problem is having no shadows (outside, not inside the lots strangely). Thanks once again.

  • omyssz8fi2ep  Did you launch Sims 3 once after editing the .sgr file, and are you sure the change stuck?  Sometimes the file reverts, either for reasons unknown (maybe an antivirus blocking changes, maybe something else) or if you repair the game.

The Nexus add-on tool only works if your particular device ID is covered, and I don't know whether that's the case.  It doesn't accomplish anything more than what you've tried to do yourself.

The missing shadows issue should be easy to solve (with AMD cards, at least) whether your GPU is recognized or not.  Open GraphicsRules.sgr, search for rendershadowmode , and change the 1 in one of the entries to a 2.  That should be sufficient.
