how do I move sims expansion packs from one computer to another

Evening folks...

I'm trying to move some Sims 3 expansion packs from one computer to another.  My daughter had all the discs that she used to purchase them and install them, but when I move them over I can't get them to work.  I put them in the folders the same way they were on the other computer and the EA / Origin IDs are the same on both computers.  They won't show up in origin and I can't find the installer to click on.  Some guidance would be appreciated.  Its a lot of money to lose!  I have all the disks, but using them requires the codes that are no longer any good.

Thank you for your help.

    Hi @darth_lucky_26,

Moving the folders from one computer to another is not enough for them to work, as there's other places where information is created when you install the games. For example, Windows has a place where it stores a list with information about the programs installed in the computer (Windows Registry), and as this is missing in the new computer, the games are not properly installed.

Feel free to move the folders back to your old computer, as right now they are only taking free space. You want to keep 'The Sims 3' folder in Documents \ Electronic Arts, as that one stores your daughter's save games, she will be happy to have her Sims still there when we manage to make the game work 😉

So let's go a step back and try to install the games through Origin, ok? Could you try to redeem your game codes in Origin? When you try that, are you getting a message letting you know the codes were already used? If so, that means the games were already registered in another EA Account.

You could log in with that account and download and install the games using Origin.

If you don't remember in which account, our advisers might be able to help. Please, contact one of our advisers through EA Help, you will find a detailed explanation on how to contact them if you need it here.

If you have any question, don't hesitate to ask 🙂

@darth_lucky_26  The DRM on the discs is no longer supported. Windows and OS X no longer support the poorly supported DRM of SecuROM and SafeDisc that the game was released with. The DRM was changed to Origin. Old games would continue to run until you reinstall or add new DLC. At that time you need to update your game to Origin. Your game needs the version 1.67 manual super patch. At version 1.67 Origin will automatically patch the game to version 1.69. The version 1.69 patch will remove or disable SecuROM and SafeDisc.  All the packs and store items were updated for Origin. You have to redeem the pack codes in Origin or thesims3.com. Once you redeem the codes you can download the packs from Origin by right clicking the game icon - show game details - extra content - scroll to see your packs. The packs have to be installed. The codes should still be good and should be able to be downloaded from the Origin account they were activated in. Once installed the pack needs to be checked in the expansions and stuff tab of the launcher.

Thanks All.  I thought we had registered the expansion packs, but we hadn't.  The ones that we still had the codes for were great and are now downloaded.  Couldn't find the codes for a couple of them, but that is okay.

    Thank you all very much!

Glad to know you got to download them, @darth_lucky_26! Thanks for letting us know how things developed 🙂

If you also play the game - happy simming!
