Are you on a PC or a Mac ? What is the exact error message you're getting ? Do you have all discs or are any of the expansions you own (if you have any) a download version ?
I'm on a Mac OSX. I don't have any expansions, just the base game. The error message is "Disc Authorization Failure: We areunable to verify that your disc is a valid copy of The Sims 3. Please contact customer service." I was able to launch the game, but sometimes it wouldn't load due to the error message--seems random.

Mac OS seems to get this message if you are using cc or even Store content.
Do you have any ?

I assume you meant custom content? I do not have any. I have actually uninstalled the game and reinstalled fresh: it worked fine prior to the latest patch and once the update was installed it wouldn't load.

Does the Disc have any scratches ? Do you have any DVD-Emulator programs on your Computer (no clue if those are necessary on Macs)
