Only Testing-Adding Lots When EIG Will Only Crash (from Store Limit)

Quick questions for you... With adding in the Sims, obviously you can't do complex connections such as grandma in another house, but do they have to be fresh out of CaS? Or can you give them a few inventory items (like canes and backpacks) that will impact the player's view of the townies? I'm guessing to accomplish this, the house that you're substituting is occupied rather than empty?
