I have to say that I can't really help. EA needs to fix it but I'm hoping the info here can help them figure out what's wrong.
For most people, the super patch works well. It's an official EA patch the only difference is that it doesn't care about the current state your game is in while the launcher offered one does.
If you are at a lower patch level then probably 1.42, you'll get the super patch offered through the launcher. They don't have incremental ones for every patch level. So there's nothing bad about it. You're just manually downloading and manually executing the file which the launcher would normally do for you.
